John Stamos speaks highly of therapist for helping him achieve sobriety

John Stamos credited his therapist Phil Stutz for saving his life and helping him achieve sobriety.

During an exclusive conversation with Page Six at the Season 2 premiere on Tuesday, July 16, the Full House star, who portrays the role of a family counsellor in Hulu’s UnPrisoned, revealed that he had been seeing his therapist for almost two decades.

The actor said, “I probably wouldn’t be here [without him]. He was big into helping me get sober.”

The General Hospital alum previously reflected on his alcohol battle and June 2015 DUI arrest in his 2023 memoir, If You Would Have Told Me.

The 60-year-old revealed that he entered a substance abuse program shortly after his arrest.

Recounting an instance from one of his very first visits, Stamos recalled his therapist saying something that stuck with him for life.

He said, “When I went to Stutz one of the first times, he said, ‘You know if you weren’t so f–king stupid you’d realise how good you have it,’ and I was like, ‘You’re right.’”

In addition, the actor admitted to introducing his late Full House co-star Bob Saget to his psychiatrist.

Stamos said, “[Bob] was a bit of a … He drove me crazy [when we first met] and I said, ‘You gotta go into therapy if you want to be friends with me,’ so he went to Stutz and Stutz helped him too.”
